Episode Eight
The second semifinal kicks off at lightweight with Carlos Henrique taking on Isaac Doederlein. Isaac pulls, Carlos using movement and pressure. Isaac locks into a single leg X, he's known for his ankle locks but doesn't look like a great bite. They trade entanglements before Carlos explodes over with a pass to side control. Isaac reguards into a crab ride style position, wrestles up and has a look at Carlos's back. Carlos walks back to escape but close call. Near the end of the round, Isaac looks again for an arm lock.
Second round, Carlos takes down a compliant Isaac. Once they hit the mat, Isaac gets a lot more active with his guard but Carlos is working on passing and stacking. Isaac works to a berimbolo position, but Carlos sits around into an armbar. He triangles the head and continues attacking the arm. He dislocates Isaac's elbow, and he will advance to the finals.
- Carlos Henrique def. Isaac Doederlein by armbar in round two
Looks like the final semifinal will be on this episode as well, this is the last episode of the season. Andy Varela facing Davis Asare at welterweight. Davis jumps closed guard and is hunting straight arm locks. Davis tries to pull into a leg but Andy spins into double unders. He applies some pressure but can't do anything with it. They end up standing again and the round ends. They only showed about 3 minutes of the full five minute round so can't say for sure who won.
Round two. Davis jumps guard again. He's working from a more supine open guard and Andy is working side to side trying to pass. They cut a few minutes from the middle of the match so we have only 60 seconds left. Andy navigating from top, not committing much either though.
Round three, not sure who is winning. Andy? They wrestle a little more. Davis finally pulls with three minutes left. Andy looking to control shins and pass, Davis turtles. Andy grabs the neck and is aiming to anaconda. He gets the tap! Andy wins and is onto the finals against Andrew Tackett.
- Andy Varela def. Davis Asare by anaconda choke in round three
The finals of the first season of UFC BJJ: Road to the Title will be Danilo Moreira vs Carlos Henrique at lightweight and Andrew Tackett vs Andy Varela at welterweight.
Episode Seven
Semifinals begin today. Elijah Carlton is unable to continue due to an arm injury and will instead cede his semifinal spot to Jason Nolf. Nolf vs Tackett.
Nolf explodes in with a double early but Andrew slaps on an arm-in guillotine. The referee resets them mid-attempt, so they lose it. Nolf goes fireman's, Andrew is right on the back triangle. He laces the rear naked choke and that's it. Two minute submission for Tackett, he's into the finals on Wednesday.
- Andrew Tackett def. Jason Nolf by rear naked choke in round one
One more semifinal this episode, Kyvann vs Danilo at 155lbs. They wrestle for a minute, Danilo looks appreciably bigger here. Kyvann pulls, Danilo moves to north south. As Kyvann tries to get up, Danilo scrambles to the back but loses it. He ends up scrambling back up to top anyway. They trade leg lock attempts before standing. Kyvann goes duck under towards the end, Danilo ends the round in a neck tie position.
Round two. Danilo pulls. Kyvann passes with a knee slide but ends up on bottom trying to stabilize. Now Danilo passes, as Kyvann reguards he threatens Estima lock. Danilo sits back again, Kyvann goes leg drag for a second, they exchange sweeps. Neither man seems that worried about position. They are cutting time off the rounds again, as well, so we don't see everything.
Round three. Danilo shoots and gets Kyvann down. Power is a major factor here. Kyvann inverts but Danilo passes. On the reguard, Kyvann gets a good look at a 50/50 but Danilo clears. Kyvann on top, Danilo inverts and wrestles up. Danilo passes and throws on a darce choke. Kyvann will survive and we go to decision, for Danilo Moreira. He will face the winner of Doederlein/Carlos.
- Danilo Moreira def. Kyvann Gonzalez by decision
Episode Six
Today's episode will feature Andy Varela taking on Nathan Haddad. The round begins, they wrestle for a long period of time. Nathan uses a few slide by attempts. Andy scores a takedown. They aren't showing the full round again today, so things end early. Seems like Andy won that round.
Second round begins. Andy ducks his way to the back, traps an arm, sinks in the rear naked choke, and scores the win.
- Andy Varela def. Nathan Haddad by rear naked choke in round two
The welterweight semifinals are now set;
- Andrew Tackett vs Elijah Carlton
- Andy Varela vs Davis Asare
The final quarterfinal will also be this episode, Mauricio Rios and Danilo Moreira. Many may know Danilo as the husband of Lis Clay but he's a very talented and experienced black belt in his own right. I think this is a great opportunity for him to stand out on his own merits.
Round one begins and Danilo pulls. He inverts to the legs and Rios accepts bottom. Danilo grabs a toe hold, Rios spins out. They are trading leg entries and bites on the heels and ankles from double pull. With short time left, Danilo knee cuts up and over the guard, then attempts an armbar but can't hold it. Rios falls back and they trade leg lock attempts for the last few seconds. They cut the round short again in the editing, so hard to gauge who really won.
Round two. Danilo pulls and looks again for a toe hold but gets denied. Rios falls back and Danilo comes up. They cut to later in the round, now Danilo is on bottom and there's thirty seconds left. Danilo laces a bear trap and attacks the far ankle, Rios drops into a nice inside heel hook but Danilo gets to the buzzer. No way to tell who won the full five minute round, they only showed about two of them.
Round three, Danilo pulls. Rios moves in and Danilo sweeps in a tornado like motion, he mounts. Rios rolls over to top, in closed guard. He stands and breaks. They trade sweeps. Rios's corner seems to think he's down two rounds. Rios falls back, they scramble and end up in double pull before standing. Danilo pulls again. Not much until the end, going to decision. It goes to... Danilo Moreira.
- Danilo Moreira def. Mauricio Rios by decision
The lightweight semifinals are now set;
- Isaac Doederlein vs Carlos Henrique
- Danilo Moreira vs Kyvann Gonzalez
Episode Five
Today will feature NCAA wrestling champion Jason Nolf facing off against Elijah Carlton. Match starts and Elijah wisely pulls guard quickly. He manages to trap an armbar! Nolf escapes. Nolf circling outside the guard, not committing to much yet. They end the round - they definitely only showed us two minutes of the match as if it was the entire five minute round. We haven't seen that yet this season.
Round two starts and they do end up wrestling more, Nolf jumps into a triangle but there isn't much on it. They stand again and Nolf goes for a fireman's, Elijah threatens a scramble but ends up accepting bottom closed guard. Nolf breaks the guard. Eljiah is inverting into legs but Nolf steps out of the attempts. At the end of the round Jason hops on an Estima lock but nothing doing. That round also ended up only being 3:30 in terms of what they showed us so we've only actually seen about 5 minutes of the 10 so far. That also makes judging rounds basically impossible.
Round three, Nolf double and he's on top quick. He is playing defensively from outside looking for his openings, Elijah just too tired to do much. They again don't show us the full five minutes. At the very end Nolf opens up more and gets stuck in an armbar, slams, and slips out. We go to decision and it goes to Carlton.
- Elijah Carlton def. Jason Nolf by decision
Josh Cisneros will not be able to make weight and instead Cobey Fehr will replace him. Josh was the highest ranked lightweight in the field by FloGrappling, so that is definitely a shakeup. Fehr will face Kyvann Gonzalez this episode.
They enter the pit and round one begins. Kyvann pulls quickly. He manages to finally make contact after a few minutes and inverts into reverse closed guard. He works into a toe hold for the submission win.
- Kyvann Gonzalez def. Cobey Fehr by Abe Lock
Episode Four
Gianni Grippo taking on Carlos Henrique. Familiar foes and both no-gi World champions. Gianni pulls and is playing De la Riva. Carlos grabs a foot lock and falls back. When he doesn’t get it he moves to waiter and Gianni falls back. Carlos tries to jump over the guard but Grippo defends. They trade foot lock attempts and sweeps until the buzzer in a fun round.
Second round, Grippo pulls again. He’s into DLR and single X. Carlos rolls over the top and snatches a front headlock out of north south. He laces the anaconda and gets the finish.
- Carlos Henrique def. Gianni Grippo by anaconda choke
Episode Three
We have Davis Asare taking on Austin Oranday. Davis shoots in quickly and takes him down, drops back on an ankle lock, and gets the tap in about one minute.
- Davis Asare def. Austin Oranday by ankle lock
Episode Two Results

Keith rolls over the top into inverted north south, but Isaac clears. Isaac working on K guard into single leg X, but Keith clears anything serious. They stand, Isaac pulls again. Round ends, nothing major happened.
Round two. Isaac pulls, Keith jumps to side control but Isaac gets out soon. Keith engaging the supine guard of Isaac while Isaac hunts inversions to single leg X. Keith stacks and works to a front headlock, then spins to a near back take, Isaac escapes to top but Keith reverses. Keith passes again into side control and controls a kimura. Keith briefly mounts and threatens armbar. Isaac escapes. Deep darce attempt on the end by Keith but Isaac survives.
Round three. Isaac visibly tired, but still dangerous. Keith shoots for an easy double leg. Keith gets a little extended passing and Isaac drops into a cross ashi which Keith escapes. Isaac pulls back into single leg X and attacks a foot lock. Keith rolls and survives. Keith counters with an inside heel hook. They reset and Isaac rolls his way to an inside ashi. Keith clears but gets his ankle caught on another pass attempt. He throws on his own inside heel hook attempt. They'll ride this out to the final whistle.
Decision goes to... Isaac Doederlein. First upset of the season. Next episode will feature Austin Oranday and Davis Asare.
